About CICMT

The potential of developing our coastal and inland waterways transportation system is immense and with effort and investment being put in place by the Ministry of Shipping and IWAI, a cheaper and green transportation mode can be effectively developed.

The Centre for Inland and Coastal Maritime Technology (CICMT) at IIT Kharagpur is set-up with a total budget of Rs. 69.2 crores with the aim to provide technological support, research and development, testing and experimentation facility to Ministry of Shipping and its subordinate offices. The setting up of CICMT will act as a catalyst in the development of coastal, inland and maritime technology by providing research inputs, design solutions and consultancy service to our much needed coastal and inland transportation which has been given a major infrastructure boost through the Ministry of Shipping's Sagarmala programme and the rejuvenation of National Waterways-1 from Haldia to Varanasi cargo movement.

CICMT aims to initiate development of holistic design solutions to the major challenges of inland/coastal transportation and coastal energy extraction, and also provide highly trained manpower to the industry through joint projects and help initiate research and development for the country's future needs.
